6/32" or deeper: Your tire tread is in good condition. At this depth, the tire can still provide adequate traction and stopping power.

4/32": This is a warning sign. Once the tread reaches 4/32 of an inch, it's time to start thinking about replacing your tires. AAA says stopping distances may drop, especially on wet or icy roads. Your vehicle’s grip could also be compromised, which impacts handling and overall safety.

2/32" or less: Replace your tires as soon as possible. At this depth, your tires are unsafe. They may not handle tough roads or sudden stops well.

The "Penny Test" for Tire Tread Depth

One popular way to check tire tread depth is the “penny test,” which involves using a U.S. penny:

Place a penny into the tread groove with Abraham Lincoln’s head upside down and facing you.
